Päivi Polo, MD, PhD
Adjunct Professor Päivi Polo is presently working as a clinical teacher and a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology in Turku University Hospital and University of Turku, Finland. She specialized in 1998 in Turku University and made a subspeciality in perinatology in 2001. In 1999 she gained her PhD degree and adjunct professor degree in 2004. Her thesis dealt with menopausal sleep disturbances and hormone replacement therapy. The thesis was awarded as “The best thesis of the year” in the medical faculty of Turku University. Since then she has published several publications, mostly about menopause, sleep, cognition, quality of life and hormone replacement therapy in middle-age and postmenopausal women. Recently her research field has broadened to cover also perinatology: sleep disturbances during pregnancy and postpartum and studies of hyperemesis. She has given nearly 200 scientific presentations in international and national forums. She was in a writing group of Finnish Insomnia-recommendations published in 2016.
In 2002 Päivi Polo won The Young Scientists Award in Cannes, France, in 2004 The Young Scientists Award of Nordic Federation of Societies of Obstetrics and Gynecology (NFOG) in Helsinki, Finland and in 2009 The Award of Menopause and Sleep Research of Nord American Menopause Society (NAMS). In addition, she has won eight poster prices in scientific meetings. From her teaching abilities she has been awarded twice: as “A lecture of the year” in 2013 (The society of medical students, Turku University) and “A Clinical Eye” (Turku University, medical faculty). Päivi Polo has been as a chairman of the Finnish Menopause Society in 2004-2008 and now is the honorary member of the Finnish Menopause Society.
