Alkistis Skalkidou MD, PhD
Alkistis Skalkidou was born in 1977 in Athens, Greece. She moved to the United States to attend the Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was later admitted and completed her medical studies in the Athens University Medical School in Athens, Greece in 2000. After receiving her PhD in Epidemiology from the same university in 2005, she has lived in Uppsala, Sweden. She completed her specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Uppsala University Hospital in 2010 and was awarded the Clinical Associate Professor (Docent) title in 2011.
She is currently a Professor at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, Uppsala University, and works also as a senior consultant in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Uppsala’s University Hospital.
Her main research focus is in biological and epidemiological aspects of peripartum depression, using large population-based cohorts in Uppsala. Other scientific interests include the effects of peripartum depression on the offspring, effects of different pregnancy dating methods on perinatal outcomes, the risk for neoplasia among women treated with ovarian-stimulating drugs and studies on vulvodynia. She has more than 100 publications. She is the chair of Endokrin ARG (SFOG’s reference group on gynecologic endocrinology) and member of the Marce Society for perinatal mental health.
